Beginner Kayaking Classes

 

Basic Kayak Skills

For ages 10+. This program is for anyone interested in taking advantage of the numerous kayaking opportunities on our local waterways. The class will take place in the Hopewell Community Center pool. Participants will learn all of the basic skills to safely enjoy river kayaking, including launching the kayak, kayaking strokes, recovering from an overturned boat, and more. All equipment will be provided.

Discover Kayaking

For ages 12-17. This program is an introduction to river kayaking. Participants will learn about sit-on-top river kayaks as well as learn some very basic skills. We will also have some time to get in the boats and paddle around the canal area of the Hopewell Marina. This activity is not intended to replace a basic kayak skills course. Participants need to be prepared to get wet. All equipment will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear water shoes.

Guided Kayaking Trips

 

Back River Kayaking Trip

For ages 14+. Join us as we paddle the Back River off of the James River. Enjoy the wildlife and scenery as we explore around historic Jamestown, including Sandy Bay. Participants under 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult guardian. The trip will launch from James City County Yacht Basin. Participants must provide their own transportation to the launch site. All equipment will be provided.

Earth Day River Clean-Up
For ages 14+. Paddle from the kayak launch at the Hopewell City Marina to the beach below Appomattox Manor. Participants will work their way back to the marina, picking up debris along the shoreline. Participants under 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult guardian. All equipment will be provided.

James River & Herring Creek Trip
For ages 14+. Paddle from the shore of Berkeley Plantation on the James River to Herring Creek. Participants will enjoy the scenery and learn the history of the area which includes Berkeley, Westover, and Evelynton Plantations. This paddle is recommended for experienced paddlers. Participants under 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult guardian. All equipment will be provided. Participants must provide their own transportation to the launch site.

Grey’s Creek
For ages 14+. Paddle from the ramp at Surry Seafood Company restaurant and explore Grey’s Creek and the surrounding wetlands. Participants under 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult guardian. All equipment will be provided. Participants must provide their own transportation to the launch site.

Archery Baseball
For ages 10+. Participants will be provided basic archery instruction and will shoot at special baseball targets and compete against each other. Prior archery experience is recommended but not required. Equipment will be provided.

Beginner Archery
For ages 10+. NASP certified instructors will teach the basics of target archery, including range safety and proper technique. Participants will learn to shoot recurve bows, compound bows, and crossbows in a controlled environment. All equipment will be provided. 

 

Session 1: Monday, January 27, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Session 2: Monday, February 24, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Session 3: Monday, March 23, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

DGIF Boating Safety Course

For ages 12+. This course, led by the Virginia  Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, is recommended for individuals who want to learn more about the fundamentals of safe and responsible boating. This course covers boating operations, safe boating practices, navigation signs, and boating responsibilities. Each participant will take the boating safety exam and, upon passing, will receive their boating safety education course completion card. Lunch will be on your own. Advance registration is required. VDGIF Hunting Safety Course

For ages 12+. Did you know that hunter safety courses are now required for 12-15 year-old hunters as well as any first-time hunter (not previously issued a hunting license)? Join us for a very informative class led by Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries instructors that will teach hunting safety, principles of conservation, and sportsmanship. This course requires that students complete self-study materials prior to the classroom portion of the course. Lunch will be on your own.
