Rec Staff Assists with Vaccinations
Updated: Mar 31
Team members from Hopewell Recreation and Parks continue to play a vital role in the distribution of COVID-19 vaccinations for residents in the City. For several weeks, staff have been reassigned to assist with getting hundreds of citizens registered for the vaccine waiting list through the state's new centralized vaccination database. The week of March 8 brought forth a new assignment when the City learned that it would play host to a mass vaccination event at Cavalier Square Shopping Center scheduled for Friday, March 12. The City would receive 500 doses of the newly released Johnson and Johnson vaccine specifically for Hopewell residents ages 65 and older and those with severe health conditions. Department staff who had been assigned to the call center immediately began contacting individuals on the waiting list in a feverish effort to fill all 500 appointments in just four days time. A team of 4-6 staff made over a thousand phone calls in just a few days, working from 8:30 a.m. to later than 8:00 p.m. to ensure that the appointments were filled. In addition to their call center responsibilities, staff also played a role manning the vaccination event. Team members assisted with monitoring the parking area, directing traffic, answering citizen inquiries, and providing wheelchair service for persons with limited mobility. The event was a tremendous success due to the collaborative effort between the City of Hopewell and Prince George County. The event came as a huge relief to many citizens who had been waiting for the vaccine for several months. However, there is still a significant need for more vaccinations across the region. Hopewell Recreation and Parks will remain ready to assist citizens when the next shipment of vaccinations becomes available. Citizens who are interested in receiving the vaccine can register or update their information online at https://vaccinate.virginia.gov/. Anyone needing additional assistance can contact the Hopewell Call Center at (804) 541-2391. The Call Center is staffed Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
