Tabitha Martinez Elected to VRPS Board
The Department would like to congratulate Tabitha Martinez, Recreation Programs Manager, on her recent election to the Virginia Recreation and Park Society Board of Directors. The Virginia Recreation and Park Society is a private, non-profit professional organization, founded in 1953 and incorporated in 1956. Its purpose is to unite all professionals, students, and interested lay persons engaged in the field of recreation, parks, and other leisure services in the Commonwealth of Virginia, into one body. VRPS members work together to promote and improve the profession in all its diversity. VRPS is affiliated with the National Recreation and Park Association and has a membership of more than 1,300 professionals.
Ms. Martinez has a long history with VRPS and has served in a variety of roles including Chair-elect of the Central Service Area and as a member of the Awards and Citations Committee. Tabitha has also volunteered her time at numerous annual conferences, professional development events, and fundraising opportunities. In 2018, Tabitha obtained Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) status and was also named the VRPS Outstanding New Professional, one of the organization's highest honors. In her role with the department, Ms. Martinez oversees all recreation programming, including the areas of community, athletic, and aquatic programs. She also organizes the department's large, citywide special events and has been instrumental in a number of initiatives including PPE distribution, vaccination support, summer camp grant funding, and more.
Aaron Reidmiller, Director of Recreation and Parks, will conclude seven years of service with the VRPS Board of Directors on December 31, 2021. He served as president of the Society in 2018 as one of the youngest professionals ever elected to the position.
